Overview
The performing arts industry is a creative and exciting one but is also extremely competitive. This Performing Arts Extended Diploma, (equivalent to 3 ‘A’ levels) has been developed to prepare you not only to perform on stage but also focuses on the skills, knowledge and understanding that today’s universities and employers demand. You will develop technical and performance skills as well as the theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills. You will gain an understanding of how different businesses and organisations in the performing arts field work and understand the variety of opportunities that are available to you. The course will enable you to develop strategies, attitudes and survival skills for sustaining a career in the performing arts industry.

What do I need to have studied/have knowledge of?
Audition, this includes preparing a solo in at least one of the styles you wish to major in and any other styles you wish to show us.
Academic interview with Head of C6 Mr Matcham.
Here is where the academic side of the entry will be discussed, looking at the following;
- Five GCSEs grades 9-4 and above, including English Language.
You need to demonstrate an interest in Performing Arts and to have an intention to progress into a related career. You will be expected to have performing experience and ideally a GCSE in Dance, Drama or Performing Arts.
What will I learn on this course?
Students will study the following mandatory units which are externally assessed:
- Prepare to work in the Performing Arts sector – Unit 1 – 120 GLH
- Proposal for a commissioning brief – Unit 2 – 60GLH
- Influential performance practice – Unit 3 – 60 GLH
- Combine Arts – Unit 4 – 60 GLH
- Performing Repertoire – Unit 8 – 60 GLH
- Arts administration – Unit 32 – 120 GLH
- Original performance – Unit 33 – 120 GLH
These units will give learners an understanding of the Performing Arts in wider contexts, including the way the sector works, job roles, progression opportunities, how to build strategies for sustaining a freelance career and how to plan and develop projects. Learners will study the work of Performing Arts practitioners and learn how to demonstrate practical ideas for performance. Learners will gain knowledge of the broader supporting functions of the sector which facilitates performance work. Learners will also bring all of your skills together to perform group work and evaluate your skills.
Learners will also develop transferable skills such as planning, communication and adaptability.
What key skills will I develop?
Team work is essential within the mandatory units but this goes hand in hand with self-motivation and independent learning skills.
As a musician, students will develop skills on their chosen instrument/voice and also develop the ability to create their own music and learn general musicianship skills.
In dance, students will improve their technical ability alongside their ability to choreograph dances and analyse their own/peer and professional dance works.
Drama students can develop supporting skills to their Drama A level and an overview to the industry.
Theatre Production explores the technical and design aspects of performing arts and will develop students understanding and ability in this area.
In addition, students will follow either a Music or Dance pathway and will study the following units which are internally assessed and moderated by OCR:
Dance Pathway
- Dance technique – Unit 13 – 120 GLH
- Dance performance – Unit 14 120 GLH
- Dance Appreciation – Unit 16 60 GLH
- Delivering dance and movement workshops – Unit 17 60 GLH
- Dance Choreography – Unit 15 60 GLH
- Dance improvisation – Unit 6 60 GLH
Music Pathway
- Singing technique – Unit 26 – 120 GLH
- Music performance – Unit 25 – 120 GLH
- Singing performance – Unit 27 – 120 GLH
- Create music to perform – Unit 23 – 120 GLH

How will I be assessed?
Exams will take place throughout the academic year falling in Jan and May for external assessments and internal assessments will happen throughout the year.
All assessed evidence will be online. If you produce a written piece of work, this will be photographed and uploaded to your evidence file. An external examiner will verify internally assessed units twice a year.
What could this course lead to?
Many students will wish to progress onto a course in Higher Education in the performing arts field. Students from the current academic cohort have all auditioned and being accepted onto Degree courses at top Dance Colleges and Performing arts schools such as Northern Ballet School, m London Studio Centre and Performers College. Previous students are studying at Wilkes and Laine Theatre ARTS.
Additional events, trips or enrichment activities
Students on this course will attend various theatre trips and workshops and will be required to pay for external trips and visits where required, however, the course is heavily subsidised. Most workshops and visiting artists are paid for by school. External trips such as Move it and theatre trips come at a set cost and are advertised on a first come first serve basis. Competitions and events that we entre are also paid for by school such as the Great Big Dance Off.
There will be plenty of opportunities to take part in extra-curricular activities such as the Commonweal Dance Company, in school performances such as full scale musical productions, evenings of entertainment and Evenings of Broadway, as well as regular C6 Showcases.
