Overview

The BTEC Level 3 National in Uniformed Protective Services (UPS) offers you the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of the uniformed protective services in society, including the police, fire and rescue, ambulance, prison and armed forces. The course explores their purpose, structure, and the skills required to work effectively within these sectors. In addition, you will develop your own personal fitness, communication, and leadership skills to prepare you for a future career.

It is a qualification that combines well with a wide range of other subjects and provides a strong foundation for further study or direct entry into employment. It is particularly suited to students with an interest in public service, law, criminology, or the wider criminal justice system.

The course gives you the chance to develop your knowledge of government policies, teamwork, leadership, discipline, and the impact of crime on society. You will gain transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and effective decision-making, all of which are highly valued by employers and higher education providers.

What do I need to have studied/have knowledge of?

This course is open to students with a genuine interest in the uniformed protective services and public sector. You should have achieved at least four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, ideally including English and Mathematics. A basic awareness of current affairs, government and law, and an interest in teamwork and physical activity will be beneficial.

The course is designed for those who enjoy learning through a mix of classroom-based study, practical activities, teamwork and real-world scenarios.

What will I learn on this course?

You will study a range of mandatory and optional units that cover:

  • The role and purpose of the uniformed protective services
  • Behaviour and discipline in the services
  • Physical preparation, health and lifestyle
  • Teamwork, leadership and communication
  • The influence of government policies on the services
  • The impact of crime and criminal justice system on society
  • Planning for and responding to major incidents

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through a combination of internally assessed coursework and practical assessments:

Unit 2: Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Protective Services – internally assessed practical and written assignments

Unit 5: Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Protective Services – practical fitness assessments with written evidence

Unit 10: Skills for Outdoor Activities and the Uniformed Protective Services – internally assessed practical assignments and reflective work

Unit 11: Expedition Skills – practical expedition planning, participation, and evaluation

What could this course lead to?

The BTEC Level 3 in Uniformed Protective Services is recognised by employers and universities and can lead to careers in the police, fire and rescue service, armed forces, prison service, or other public sector roles.

Students who successfully complete the course may also progress to higher education, studying subjects such as Public Services, Policing, Criminology, Law, Forensic Science, or Emergency and Disaster Management.

The skills you develop – teamwork, communication, discipline, and problem-solving – are highly transferable and will prepare you for a wide range of careers.

Additional events, trips or enrichment activities

In Term 5 of Year 12, students will plan and undertake a 2-day expedition in the local area which will involve camping overnight.

In Term 3 of Year 13, students will take part in a range of outdoor activities at a residential centre or similar.
